Kishan's Powerplay Bash: India's Joint-Highest Chase
Ishan Kishan's 21-ball fifty in Raipur against New Zealand was the fastest for India in men's T20Is, surpassing Abhishek Sharma's 22-ball effort in the previous match. Kishan's 56 runs in the powerplay were the second-most by a batter for India, behind Abhishek's 58 against England in Mumbai last year.
Only three batters have scored more than Kishan in a powerplay in men's T20Is while batting at No. 3 or lower. Josh Inglis' 51 off 29 balls against the West Indies in 2025 is the only other instance of a non-opener reaching fifty inside the powerplay against a Full-Member team.
Suryakumar Yadav, on Kishan's performance, said, 'This is what we want.' Suryakumar had a 23-inning streak without a fifty in T20Is before his 82 not out against New Zealand on Friday. His previous fifty came against Bangladesh in October 2024.
Suryakumar has ten fifty-plus scores across all T20s in 200-plus chases, the joint-most for any batter. He has four fifty-plus scores across six 200-plus target chases in T20Is, more than Hendricks and Babar Azam.
India chased down 209 against New Zealand in Raipur, their joint-highest successful chase in T20Is, equalling the effort against Australia in Visakhapatnam in 2023. It was the highest in T20Is after being two down for less than ten runs, with only one team (PNG) managing to successfully chase a 200-plus target from that situation before them.
India and PNG are the only teams to have successfully chased 200-plus targets in T20Is despite their openers aggregating less than ten runs. India's chase was the fastest by a Full-Member team, bettering Pakistan's 205-run chase in 16 overs against New Zealand in Auckland last year.
Zak Foulkes' economy rate of 22.33 in Raipur, where he conceded 67 runs in three overs, was the second-worst for any bowler in a men's T20I, where they bowled three or more overs. The worst is 23.25 by Musa Jobarteh, who conceded 93 runs in four overs against Zimbabwe in 2024.
Foulkes' 67 runs conceded in Raipur are the most by a bowler for New Zealand in a men's T20I, surpassing Ben Wheeler's 64 runs in 2018. Foulkes also conceded 50 runs in 2.1 overs, the joint-quickest among players from a Full-Member nation.
Only two bowlers have conceded 50 runs in a quicker time in a men's T20I: Vasu Saini of Romania in 1.4 overs against Belgium in 2025, and Mungun Altankhuyag of Mongolia in two overs against Nepal in 2023.
The match had 14 overs with 15 or more runs, the joint third-most for any men's T20I, with both India and New Zealand having seven such overs. Friday's game was the first instance of India conceding 15-plus runs in an over on seven instances in a men's T20I.
