The first graph suggests Tesla's sales peaked in late 2023, just before the upgraded Model 3's release. While there was a record quarter in 2025 after the Model Y upgrade, overall sales have declined by a significant margin.
The decline is most prominent in Europe, where sales have dropped by nearly a third since late 2023. So, what's behind this downturn? A combination of factors is at play: the anticipation and release of upgraded models, increased competition from affordable Chinese EVs, particularly BYD, and the removal of EV rebates in the US. But there's one factor that Tesla supporters and shareholders would rather not discuss - the Elon factor and his controversial political associations.
And this is the part most people miss: Tesla's brand reputation has taken a hit. According to the Axios Harris poll, Tesla's reputation ranking in the US has plummeted from 8th in 2021 to 95th in 2025. The poll rates Tesla "dead last" in character and near the bottom in ethics and citizenship. Other companies associated with Elon Musk, like Spacex and X, also fared poorly, with the Trump Organization ranking 99th.
These rankings are specific to the US, but it's not hard to see how Musk's political interventions could impact Tesla's brand reputation globally. This might partially explain why Tesla, despite producing some of the best-value EVs, is experiencing a sales slump.
