I also know that there was some stuff along the way that happened with Bo and the coaching staff," Merrifield shared. He elaborated, "There was some stuff that went on with Bo and the Jays as far as the front office and coaching staff that maybe tainted that relationship a little bit."
But here's where it gets controversial... Merrifield suggests that these internal frictions made Bichette's return to Toronto almost inevitable to be a parting of ways. While he acknowledges the Blue Jays likely made some effort to re-sign him, perhaps for the sake of the fanbase, he believes it was ultimately for the best that Bichette sought opportunities elsewhere. Bichette, who spent his entire seven-year major league career with the Blue Jays, recently inked a three-year, $126 million deal with the New York Mets. At his introductory press conference, Bichette expressed a desire to stay in Toronto, but also stated that joining the Mets was a necessary decision for him. Merrifield, who played with Bichette in 2022 and 2023, echoed this sentiment, stating, "I wasn't really surprised he didn't go back to Toronto. I really would have been more surprised if he would have been back in Toronto just from some of the stuff that happened along the way." He further clarified, "It's not that I think that they ended on bad terms, but I just think it was probably best for both parties that he ended up somewhere else."
