According to Jon Heyman of The New York Post, the White Sox are showing interest in Conforto. It's worth noting that he was with the Dodgers in 2025, but his return seemed unlikely, especially after Los Angeles signed Kyle Tucker.
Conforto, who will be 33 in March, is coming off a few seasons where his performance dipped. However, his early career with the Mets showcased his true potential. Up to the end of the 2020 season, he had played 623 games, with a batting line of .259/.358/.484 and a wRC+ of 128. He was a consistent power hitter from 2017 to 2019, hitting around 30 home runs each year, and added 9 more in the shortened 2020 season.
Unfortunately, he hasn't quite reached that level since. His production faltered in 2021, with only 14 home runs and offensive numbers closer to the league average. A shoulder surgery sidelined him for the entire 2022 season. He then signed a two-year deal with the Giants. In 2023, he was again around league average, hitting 15 home runs.
The second year of that contract showed more promise. Conforto hit 20 home runs and had a slash line of .237/.309/.450. His wRC+ was 12% better than the league average, marking his best performance in a while.
And this is the part most people miss... There was potential for even more. A hamstring strain disrupted his first half, and he struggled to find his rhythm. However, he stayed healthy in the second half and heated up, with a .272/.337/.543 line and a wRC+ of 143 in his final 169 plate appearances.
The Dodgers took a gamble on that hot streak, signing Conforto to a one-year deal worth $17 million, but it didn't pan out. He slashed .199/.305/.333 for an 83 wRC+. The Dodgers didn't include him on their postseason roster.
With his recent struggles, his market value should be lower than it was a year ago. This makes him an intriguing buy-low candidate for the White Sox, who could benefit from his potential upside. Despite his down 2025 season, there were reasons for optimism.
His 11.5% walk rate last year was impressive, and his 24.9% strikeout rate was typical for him. His .247 batting average on balls in play was low, suggesting some bad luck. His Statcast data wasn't elite, but it wasn't terrible either. His bat speed was in the 77th percentile, his barrel rate was 56th, his hard-hit rate was 53rd, and his average exit velocity was 48th.
The White Sox are in a rebuilding phase and aren't expected to contend soon. They're well-suited to take a chance on Conforto and hope he returns to form. If he has a strong first half, he could be traded at the deadline for prospects.
Chicago's outfield currently projects to include Luis Robert Jr. and Andrew Benintendi. Both could be traded this year and might also spend time as designated hitters due to their injury histories.
Other young players like Brooks Baldwin, Tristan Peters, Derek Hill, and Everson Pereira are also vying for outfield playing time. Baldwin and Peters still have options and could be sent to the minors. Hill and Pereira are out of options but could be non-roster depth.
With Tucker signed, Cody Bellinger is the top remaining outfield free agent, followed by Harrison Bader. Other options include Conforto, Mike Tauchman, Austin Hays, and Miguel Andujar. Max Kepler would have been in this group, but he recently received an 80-game PED suspension, impacting his appeal.
